How and When to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

January 29, 2014

Makeup brushes are an investment, and breeding ground for bacteria. Think of all of the bacteria on your face on a daily basis, mixed with your makeup, and double dipping back and forth from your face to pallets.

How often do you clean your makeup brushes?

You should wash your makeup brushes at least once a week to maintain cleanliness and longevity of brushes. I recommend washing your brushes at night so they're dry in the morning. Between weekly washing, use a makeup brush spray every morning when you're done applying your makeup.

The good news is that you will not need a lot of time to wash your brushes - you'll just have to remember to do it!

What You Will Need to Wash Your Makeup Brushes

  • Brush cleaner or mild soap. I recommend Sephora Purifying Brush Shampoo
  • Water
  • Towel

How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Lay out your towel, brushes and cleaner (soap)
Begin by running your brush under lukewarm water
Squirt mild soap or brush cleaner on the brush tip
Gently massage the soap into the bristles, without manipulating the direction the bristles fall
Run water on the brush and dab the brush lightly - you'll see the makeup washing down the drain
lay the brush flat to dry. Do not rub the bristles with a towel or set the brushes upright.
I like to wash my brushes in the afternoon so they're dry by the next morning.

Keep Bushes Clean Between Washing

Purchase a makeup cleansing spray to keep your brushes clean every day. Anti-bacterial daily brush cleaners remove traces of makeup and bacteria without needing to rinse after.

I recommend Sephora Daily Brush Cleaner or Make Up For Ever Instant Brush Cleaner.
